Care of the children
We provide a stable, secure environment in which there are clear boundaries between what is acceptable and what is not.
Childcare in Seamab is based on consistency and fairness.
Since anti-social behaviour is essentially unfair to others it must be dealt with; trying to understand its root cause is essential but does not preclude the need to tackle the problem.
Children at Seamab quickly learn that their inclusion in outings or activities depends on their behaviour. Equally important is the affection and nurturing which is the right of every child.
Each child is an individual with their own needs and personality, needing different amounts of nurturing and caring and a differing emphasis on discipline.
There is no place for punishment as a method of regulating behaviour. Emphasis is placed, instead, on the importance of children making restitution and reparation as consequences for hostile, selfish or unhelpful acts.
Our care team
The care team is led by the Depute Principal, who is responsible for:
- all aspects of the care of the children;
- supervision and training of twenty full-time, eight part-time staff, a number of sessional staff and seven full-time waking night staff.
The care staff are responsible for the welfare of the children before and after school and a member of the care staff is also present in each class to provide continuity for the children.
During the day there are three adults in each bungalow with five children. This ensures an adequate level of care while the children participate in evening activities and allows individual work to be undertaken.
In each bungalow a member of the night care staff is awake all through the night, while one member of staff sleeps. The children who go home regularly are taken there by a member of staff. This aids communication between home and Seamab. It enables parents, children and staff to discuss the previous week and help with plans for the weekend.
